There are moments in our lives when the Lord takes things or people away from us. These valleys are where the shipwreck of our faith can occur. However, it’s also where the greatest refinement of our faith can take place. Do we reject the Lord in such moments of heartbreak, or do we cast ourselves totally on His mercy and His keeping power? When we are in the midst of our deepest and darkest spiritual battles, when the trajectories of our lives are irreparably altered, and when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death to whom will we turn? God shows up to Job and declares His sovereignty, and Job responds with a prayer that can guide us even today. He proclaims the character of God and declares that God is indeed the creator and master of all things. Will we in the time of our greatest challenge be still and know who God is? Knowing the God we serve is much more important than knowing why something has taken place. One word from the Lord can change everything!
Then Job answered the Lord and said:
“I know that You can do everything,
And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.
You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
Listen, please, and let me speak;
You said, ‘I will question you, and you shall answer Me.’
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear,
But now my eye sees You.
Therefore I abhor myself,
And repent in dust and ashes.”
